Dayprogram new architecture Java- en KNSM islands & West
The Java- and KNSM-islands have been developed in a short space of time from forgotten and deserted corners of Amsterdam into sought-after islands for living, prominent in international architecture and city development.
The ‘Koninklijke Stoombootmaatschappij’ (KNSM’- The Royal Steamer Company) ran its regular services from here to Western Indonesia, Central-America, the Levant, and European harbours. Nowadays you’ll find here hip shops, living quarters, studios, and offices.
You will first cruise to the Western islands, such as the former NDSM area comprising the Silodam of MVRDV, het ‘Muziekgebouw’(Music Centre) and the ‘Westerdokseiland’ – another Amsterdam island. If you wish we can provide lunch or other catering on board.
You will disembark on the Java-island for a walking tour with guide towards the KNSM-island passing interesting gardens and bridges crossing new canals, houses designed by internationally renowned architects such as Coenen, Kollhof, and Rapp, like the ‘Venetiëplein’ (Venice Square) and ‘Barcelonaplein’ (Barcelona Square). And…we will visit a cosy Amsterdam café with a terrace along the quay!
To round the day off we will have dinner in an interesting contemporary location.
