Golden Age in Amsterdam: spices,
wines and the VOC
Hidden
and unknown to many, Amsterdam
has a beautiful Hortus Botanicus,
laid out in 1682 as a nursery
for the growing of medical plants
and herbs. In 1706 it was the
first place outside Europe where
coffee beans where grown. The
Hortus now houses one of the largest
botanic collections in the world.
We will give you a guided tour
with special emphasis on medical
plants and houseplants that were
brought in from the East Indies.
We will also tell you about the
practices of ship doctors, how
they used to treat patients at
that time and how they treated
the sea diseases and then unknown
tropical diseases.
A boat will then pick up and take
you from the Plantage neighborhood
for a roundtrip. During the trip
your guests will be served herring
and jenever.
After that you will enjoy a 'tasting
lecture' on the use of spices
like clove, mace and pepper are
used. During dinner we will tell
you about wines that people used
to drink in the 17th century.
Extra: tour of the Rijksmuseum
